Barbados Tridents Beat St Lucia Kings by 9 Runs in CPL 2026

Barbados Tridents held off a spirited St Lucia Kings chase to win the ninth match of the 2026 Caribbean Premier League by 9 runs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet on August 16.

St Lucia Kings won the toss and chose to field first, but an 80-minute rain delay before the start reduced the contest to 18 overs a side. Batting first, Barbados Tridents posted 177 for 5, before restricting St Lucia Kings to 168 for 7 in their chase of 178.

The result was built on a 79-run partnership between Sherfane Rutherford and Rivaldo Clarke, who steadied the Tridents’ innings after a watchful start before accelerating in the closing overs. Rutherford was patient early on but found his range as the innings progressed, striking four sixes and two fours to reach 61 — his second half-century of the CPL 2026 season and the eighth of his CPL career. He was eventually dismissed off the first ball of the final over, caught by Ackeem Auguste at deep cover, with Clarke following two deliveries later, caught off Charith Asalanka.

With Rutherford and Clarke gone, the Tridents lost momentum in the death overs, as Matthew Forde and Khari Campbell were both taken for runs in the closing stages. It was left to Shadley van Schalkwyk, who bowled three of the final five overs, to apply the brakes at the other end. Van Schalkwyk conceded fewer than ten runs in two of those overs and picked up two wickets in the last over of the innings — his first two wickets in the CPL.

In reply, St Lucia Kings could not quite match the required rate across the 18 overs and finished on 168 for 7, falling short by 9 runs despite a fighting chase.

The win kept Barbados Tridents unbeaten in the tournament, following their earlier victory over Jamaica Kingsmen. For St Lucia Kings, the defeat came after a dramatic win in their previous fixture, and they will look to respond quickly as the CPL 2026 group stage continues at Gros Islet in the coming days.
